Banning Independent Study School (BISS) provides students with a personalized and flexible learning option, designed for those who benefit from independent study while still being connected to Banning Unified School District’s academic standards and support services.

Enrollment Criteria
To be eligible for enrollment, students must meet 2 of the 3 assessment requirements and additional academic, attendance, and credit criteria.
Academic Assessments

Banning Common Assessments: Mastery of 3 or more standards

i-Ready Diagnostic: Within 1 grade level or above
(available for high school; lessons through grade 8) -
SBAC (CAASPP Testing): Standard Nearly Met or above
Report Cards

Elementary (Grades K–5): Majority 3s and 4s, with no 1s in academic standards

Secondary (Grades 6–12): Minimum 2.0 GPA on the most recent quarter
Attendance

90% attendance during the last quarter or trimester

Absences due to verified medical illness will not be counted

Exceptions: For legitimate medical or mental health concerns, the attendance requirement may be waived through a 504 Plan or IEP amendment
English Learners

Students must be EL Level 3 or 4 (with Designated ELD course)
High School Credit Requirements
Students must not be severely credit deficient. Minimum credits by grade level:

9th grade: 0 credits (both semesters)

10th grade: 30 credits (semester 1) | 55 credits (semester 2)

11th grade: 85 credits (semester 1) | 115 credits (semester 2)

12th grade: 150 credits (semester 1) | 185 credits (semester 2)

Submit Enrollment Application
Complete and return the required forms through the website or directly at the school. -
Attend Orientation Meeting
Families will be contacted to schedule an orientation, where program expectations and supports will be reviewed.
